male lipoWhat is Male Liposuction?

In today’s society, women are not the only ones feeling the pressure to look and feel their best. Men are increasingly becoming aware of their appearance and pursuing a range of cosmetic procedures to combat various signs of aging, including male liposuction for fat deposits that become harder to get rid of with age, no matter how much they diet and exercise.
Accumulation of fat pockets in men can be caused by a number of reasons, including decreased physical activity, as well as metabolic and hormonal changes caused by aging.
Liposuction surgery is a great treatment to sculpt any part of the body, including:

⦁ Thighs
⦁ Buttocks
⦁ Hips
⦁ Lower back
⦁ Abdomen
⦁ Arms
⦁ Neck
⦁ Chin
⦁ Ankles

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE?

Liposuction requires only small incisions of about ¼-inch in length. A cannula – a tube and suction device – is inserted into the incision to break up and “vacuum” the excess fat from the body. There are several different liposuction techniques. The main two that Dr. Lewis uses are as follows:

Tumescent Liposuction is the standard method that Dr. Lewis uses. It begins with the injection of the tumescent fluid, which is a saline solution combined with a local anesthetic and epinephrine. This fluid decreases post-operative pain and blood loss. The small cannulas are then passed into the incisions, and the fat is carefully suctioned.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (Vaser Liposuction) can be a useful adjunct to tumescent liposuction in some locations where the tissue can be very fibrous, such as the upper flanks and back. In this technique, an ultrasound probe is introduced into the area of fat, which helps to break down the fat that is between fibers underneath the skin. The cannulas and suction can then proceed as in the tumescent technique.

Ultrasound may also be helpful when performing liposuction under the chin and male breast reduction for gynecomastia. The tissue there is often fibrous, and the incisions can be smaller when ultrasound breaks up the fat before the procedure.

WILL ANESTHESIA AND PAIN RELIEF BE USED DURING / AFTER SURGERY?

You will be made comfortable throughout the whole procedure either with a local anesthetic and intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Small procedures can be done in office with local anesthesia, but larger ones are performed in the operating room with sedation or general anesthesia.

After surgery, Dr. Lewis will give you a narcotic pain medication to ease any post-operative discomfort.

WHAT HAPPENS IMMEDIATELY AFTER SURGERY?

Immediately after liposuction, you will be wrapped in surgical garments to control post-operative swelling. You will spend time in the recovery room observed by our licensed nurses, and when you are fully awake and comfortable, you will be able to go home to rest.

HOW LONG WILL COMPLETE RECOVERY TAKE?

Male liposuction surgery is a procedure that is uniquely tailored for each patient, so everyone is different. The speed of your recovery depends upon the type of liposuction performed, the volume of fat removed, and the type of anesthesia used. After your initial consultation, Dr. Lewis will be in a better position to advise you what you can expect.

You should be able to return to work in 3-7 days. Results are visible almost immediately and continue to improve throughout the healing process.

In most cases, you will wear a compression garment for 3-6 weeks to decrease swelling as you heal. You can expect mild discomfort, soreness, and swelling for a period of time, but these symptoms can be easily managed with proper care. 80% of the swelling should be gone by six weeks after surgery.

We are available throughout the recovery process, and you are encouraged to contact us with any questions and/or concerns you may have after your male liposuction procedure.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

The most appropriate candidates for male liposuction are men who are concerned with localized fat deposits, but are otherwise healthy and fit. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. The treatment helps accentuate your masculinity and muscle definition by diminishing excess fat that has been resistant to traditional body slimming methods.

To decrease associated costs and reduce overall recovery time, cosmetic surgery procedures can be combined. The procedure that men often opt to have in conjunction with male liposuction is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

While liposuction can provide a substantial reduction in the amount of fat in the abdominal wall, it does not address any excess skin that may be present. Performing a combination liposuction and tummy tuck can provide fantastic results if you have both excess skin and fat in the abdominal area and/or flanks.
