Facial Liposuction

When aging causes excess fat to accumulate around the cheeks, jowls, or chin, facial liposuction – a minimally invasive surgical procedure – can often restore a tighter, more youthful contour to the face.

Gordon Lewis, M.D.

Dr. Lewis, a native of Richmond, prioritizes building honest, trusting relationships and providing personalized care for his patients.

Meet Dr. Lewis

Dr. Lewis has performed numerous successful facial liposuction procedures, helping his patients turn back the clock by the removal of localized facial fat. The surgery is much like sculpting. A tube or cannula is inserted into the incisions, and a vacuum device removes the excess fatty tissue. The result is a younger-looking face and profile.

For younger patients, facial liposuction can sometimes delay the need for more invasive surgical procedures like a facelift. Older patients with more significant signs of aging may find that facial liposuction in conjunction with a facelift or neck lift will bring the best results.

You can maintain the outcome of your facial liposuction procedure by keeping your weight steady. However, the aging process continues, and you may find that a subsequent procedure is necessary in a few years.

Areas improved by facial liposuction:

  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Jowls/Jawline
  • Neck

Procedure

Individualized approach

Dr. Lewis customizes every facial liposuction procedure, taking your anatomy, condition, and goals into account. He uses the latest minimally invasive liposuction methods to remove excess fat and tighten the lower portion of the face for a naturally younger look.

Incisions:

Liposuction requires only small incisions, and Dr. Lewis takes care to place them in areas that will remain mostly hidden. These locations depend on the areas where the liposuction will be performed, however. If chin liposuction is being done, the incision is under the chin. For the jowls, the incisions are usually hidden under the jawline. For the cheeks, the incisions are usually hidden within the hairline.

Recovery

Will anesthesia and pain relief be used during / after facial liposuction?

Dr. Lewis ensures that you are comfortable throughout the whole procedure. You will be given a local anesthetic and IV sedation for what is often called “twilight sleep.” This is lighter anesthesia than a full general anesthetic, but you will be very relaxed and will not feel any pain.

What happens immediately after facial liposuction?

If liposuction was performed on your chin or neck, you may be fitted with a compression garment. The incisions will be dressed, and you can go home as soon as you are able. You will feel drowsy, however, so someone must be available to drive you home.

How long will complete recovery from facial liposuction take?

Recovery symptoms usually last 1-2 weeks. Any non-dissolvable sutures will be removed in your first or second post-operative visit with Dr. Lewis about a week after your surgery. We will monitor your progress carefully to make sure you are healing well.

Most of the residual tenderness, swelling, and bruising should subside around the second week. Apply cold packs, and keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.

Vigorous exercise could worsen your swelling and bruising, so please refrain from this activity for 3-4 weeks.

Candidacy

Am I a good candidate for facial liposuction?

Most adults who do not take blood thinning medications are potential candidates for facial liposuction. You should be at a healthy, stable weight, however. If you lose a significant amount of weight after facial liposuction, you could be left with loose skin.

You should refrain from smoking for at least 4 weeks before your surgery and 2 weeks after. Most medical issues can be managed in order to make surgery safe, but diabetes and high blood pressure, in particular, must be under control before the procedure.
