Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is a common procedure among aging women who have witnessed their perky, youthful-looking breasts begin to sag. The sagging of the breasts is part of the natural aging process and eventually affects every woman. Breasts may begin to sag due to other factors such as pregnancy and breast feeding, as well as massive weight loss. Breast lift surgery focuses on repositioning the breasts to a higher position on the chest. However, some women may not have enough volume for breast lift surgery, in which case breast implants can be placed for best aesthetic results. Dr. Lewis is a gifted Richmond breast lift surgeon who has helped many women achieve a beautiful breast shape regardless of their age.
Are you a Candidate?
Breast lift surgery is an excellent treatment option for women who wish to improve pendulous breasts. In most cases, patients pursue breast lift surgery to accomplish the following:
- Improve sagging breasts due to aging, weight loss or breast feeding
- Improve firmness and position of the breasts
- Restore volume by combining breast lift with breast augmentation
The most suitable candidates for breast lift are generally healthy individuals. However, older patients who have minor medical conditions may also undergo the procedure after a careful assessment of their health history. Dr. Lewis determines each patient’s candidacy on a case by case basis.
Your Breast Lift Consultation
Dr. Lewis is familiar with the latest surgical techniques that allow him to lift the breasts with minimal tissue trauma and scarring. During your consultation with Dr. Lewis, he will carefully examine your breast anatomy and tissue availability. He will listen to your aesthetic goals and go over all of the treatment options that will help him achieve the results you seek. At the time of the consultation, Dr. Lewis’ Richmond, VA breast lift patients will also learn about:
- What to expect based on breast anatomy, skin characteristics and fat availability
- Degree of sagginess and asymmetry
- The surgical approach for minimal scarring
- Nipple position and breast implants, if necessary
- Anesthesia and surgical facility
- What you can do to reduce risk of complications
- Cost of surgery and financing options
This is also an excellent time to ask questions and view before and after breast lift surgery photos. Dr. Lewis believes that knowledge is power and therefore strives to thoroughly educate his breast lift patients so that they can feel comfortable knowing what to expect prior to, during and after surgery.
Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure may last anywhere from two to three hours, or longer if breast implants are being placed. The degree of the lift is used to determine the incision type. The most common types of breast lift incisions include:
- Anchor incision – three incisions that form an anchor on the surface of the breast
- Lollipop incision – two incisions, one of which is created around the areola and the other extends from the areola toward the bottom of the breast
- Donut incision – an incision created around the areola
- Crescent incision – the incision is created just along the upper part of the areola
Once the appropriate incision is created, Dr. Lewis removes the excess skin and moves the nipple and the areola to a higher position on the breast. The skin that was previously above the nipple is then brought down around the nipple and sutured in place. During the procedure, the nipple and the areola remain connected to the underlying tissue and nerves to help prevent loss of sensation after surgery.
After completing the procedure, Dr. Lewis places surgical garments around the chest to protect the breasts in the days following surgery. This also helps keep the breasts in place and reduce swelling and risk of trauma to the treatment area.
Breast Lift Surgery Recovery
Breast lift surgery involves tissue removal and reshaping, which is not easy on the body. After the procedure, patients experience swelling, bruising and some discomfort, all of which is relieved with pain medicine, antibiotics and plenty of rest. During the first week, patients will wear a surgical bra to help with the healing process. Dr. Lewis will generally remove any stitches within a few days and patients can return to work after seven to 10 days. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for up to one month. In some cases, patients will experience temporary loss of nipple sensation.
Dr. Lewis has an excellent surgical track record and his patients are always well-informed on what to expect after surgery. Aftercare instructions are provided to each patient and explained in great detail. Patients are also encouraged to contact Dr. Lewis and/or one of his staff members with any questions and concerns during recovery.
